Following the crisis surrounding the conversion of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, MAPOLY to Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology, MAUSTECH which has led to an indefinite postponement of the second semester examination, the National body of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic, ASUP has disclosed that they don’t have enabling environment to conduct the examination.
The ASUP leadership also reiterated that they are not on strike, adding that examination was not conducted because the psyches of the people have been killed.
At press conference held at the ASUP secretariat, the ASUP National Vice President, Timothy Ogunseye and Southwest Zonal Coordinator, Olawale Omobaorun challenged the NBTE to speak out on the controversy.
It would be recalled that, the second semester examination which has been scheduled to commence on 18th September was postponed indefinitely as a result of the failure of the government to reply letters sent by the union on the fate of the lecturers and students of present MAPOLY.
Ogunseye and Omobaorun lamented that, the refusal of the regulatory body to speak out on the true status of the new polytechnic is affecting the decision of the union.
The National Vice President explained that, the union was not against the upgrade and creation of new polytechnic, saying that they are more concerned about the status of the new poly in Ipokia.
According to him, “ writing exam or not writing exam is not our problem, but the point is we don’t have enabling environment to conduct exam.
“The chapter is not on strike, we are on duty. The only problem is that we don’t have an enabling environment, the psyche of people are being killed. So, that is the true picture”, he said.
Ogunseye added that, there is no accreditation of courses, infrastructure and other amenities for proper take off of the new polytechnic.
However, the ASUP zonal coordinator also expressed dismay that MAPOLY ‘is being killed’ for a university ‘on the altar of politics.’
Omobaorun described conversion of MAPOLY to MAUSTECH as ‘Egba agenda’ being championed by the governor.
He said: "Let the government of the day listen to the people; let them look into all the proposals put across through communique and letters. Let the government of the day invites this chapter for thorough discussion. Let the regulatory body, NBTE speak out. Have they accredited Ogun Poly? Unofficially, you know the union has its way of getting information and as far as everything is concerned, there is no Ogun Poly.
"But, we are annoyed; we are disappointed that the regulatory body has refused to talk. If they speak out that there is no accreditation covering for Ogun Poly, all of this will be put to rest but we all know Nigeria, all of this is politics.
"They (Egba people) are saying they want a university but must you kill a 36 year old which is MAPOLY for day old? This is a chapter that has been self-financing since this government has been in office. If we want to count, about two three occasions, they have given the polytechnic 11 million but this same government has taken money from MAPOLY. It is quite obvious, it is not easy to fund education particularly university education."
